Sequential Figure & Ground

In the exercise of sequential figures, the letters ‘TYPOGRAPHY’ and the numbers ‘0-9’ were shown in a sequence that highlighted the exploration of Gestalt principles. With the given typefaces (Avenir Next Bold, Adobe Garamond Pro Regular, Didot Regular, Baskerville Italic, Helvetica Neue Bold, and Futura Bold), experimenting with the proportion and size of the characters allowed for intriguing foreground and background relationships and played on both the value transition and shape of letterforms. The flow of the sequence was tied together by the similar characteristics of letter and number anatomy, as well as the weight of the typeface/fonts. Balance was shown in the sequence with an equal number of black backgrounds to white and a transition of lighter and bold typefaces.
